Syracuse, New York – Syracuse football coach Fran Brown recently addressed star receiver Trebor Pena’s decision to enter the transfer portal, shedding light on Pena’s concerns about compensation and uncertainties surrounding the team’s new quarterback. Brown disclosed that Pena had requested additional pay, but when faced with a figure beyond his comfort level, Brown made the decision to part ways with the sixth-year senior.
During a radio interview with ESPN Syracuse, Brown revealed that Pena also questioned the potential of LSU-transfer quarterback Rickie Collins Jr. as a first-year starter. Brown emphasized that such doubts were not Pena’s responsibility to ponder and ultimately factored into his decision for Pena to depart. Collins, previously overshadowed by talented quarterbacks at LSU, has now been entrusted with leading the Syracuse offense.
Acknowledging Pena’s contributions on the field, Brown expressed confidence in the depth of Syracuse’s wide receivers room and the capabilities of offensive coordinator Jeff Nixon. Despite recruiting Pena back at Temple, Brown believed that Pena’s exit was a manageable loss for the team. This departure opens up opportunities for other players like Darrell Gill Jr., Justus Ross-Simmons, Emanuel Ross, and Darius Johnson to step up for the Orange.
Notably, Pena’s departure highlights Syracuse’s approach to transfer negotiations and Brown’s firm stance on compensation. As more players consider entering the transfer portal, Brown emphasized that he would not hesitate to ask some to leave the program. Keeping in line with his coaching philosophy, Brown stressed the importance of financial balance and maintaining the integrity of the team.
Looking ahead, Syracuse continues to navigate changes within the roster, with Brown actively pursuing a linebacker in the transfer portal. As the team concludes its spring practices in Rochester, Brown remains committed to shaping a competitive and resilient squad for the upcoming season.
