Teen driver facing charges after two die in high-speed chase

TOMS RIVER, NJ – A tragic high-speed chase in Toms River has left two people dead after a teenager, who does not possess a driver’s license, allegedly led police on a pursuit reaching speeds of up to 118 mph. The incident occurred on Friday night, leaving the local community in mourning as they gather to pay their respects at the crash site.

According to law enforcement, the teenage driver was operating a BMW and livestreaming the chase as it unfolded. The passengers in the vehicle reportedly encouraged the driver to increase speed during the pursuit, which spanned several routes including the Thomas Mathis Bridge and Route 35 through Seaside Heights.

The chase ended abruptly when police discontinued their pursuit due to safety concerns. However, moments later, the BMW collided with a Toyota Camry at the intersection of Routes 37 and 166. The Toyota was carrying four young occupants; the driver and front passenger were killed, while the remaining two passengers sustained critical injuries.

Eyewitnesses and community members expressed outrage and sorrow over the incident, emphasizing the senselessness of the deaths caused by reckless driving. The identities of the victims have not been disclosed, but it is known that they were both in their twenties.

The teenage driver of the BMW was unharmed in the crash and was promptly detained by police at the scene. Blood tests were conducted, though the results have yet to be made public. The driver faces multiple charges as a juvenile, including aggravated manslaughter and vehicular homicide.

As the investigation continues, the community grapples with the loss of young lives and the disturbing circumstances surrounding the crash. Many have gathered at the scene to leave tributes, such as flowers and stuffed animals, in memory of the victims.

The tragic event has sparked discussions about the need for greater awareness and education on road safety, particularly among young drivers. Authorities urge parents and guardians to instill respect for traffic laws and the importance of safe driving in their children.

As Toms River residents mourn, they hope for justice for the victims and a renewed focus on preventing such tragedies in the future.
