SRINAGAR, India – Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated as soldiers from both countries briefly exchanged fire along the highly militarized frontier in Kashmir. The dispute followed a deadly attack on tourists in the region, resulting in 26 casualties, mostly Indian nationals.
According to Indian officials, the massacre was labeled a “terror attack,” with India accusing Pakistan of supporting the assailants. However, Pakistan denied any involvement in the attack near Pahalgam in India-controlled Kashmir, which was claimed by a group named the Kashmir Resistance.
In response to the attack, three Indian army officials confirmed that Pakistani soldiers initiated gunfire towards an Indian position in Kashmir. The Indian soldiers retaliated, but fortunately, there were no reported casualties from the exchange. Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs chose not to comment on the incident.
The attack on Tuesday marked one of the most severe assaults on civilians in Kashmir in recent years, leading to heightened tensions between India and Pakistan. Both nations have a history of conflict over the disputed region, where they have engaged in multiple wars. As a result of the recent attack, India made the decision to suspend a crucial water-sharing treaty, close the only operational land border crossing, revoke visas issued to Pakistani nationals, and take further diplomatic actions.
Pakistan responded by denying any involvement in the attack and retaliated by canceling visas issued to Indian nationals, closing their airspace to Indian-owned airlines, suspending trade with India, and implementing other measures. The situation further escalated as Pakistan warned that any disruption in the water flow would be considered an “act of war” and raised the possibility of suspending the Simla Agreement, a significant peace treaty between the two countries.
The United Nations has urged both India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and prevent further deterioration of the situation. The ongoing tensions have sparked protests in various cities, with residents demanding justice for the victims of the attack and expressing their sentiments against the escalating conflict between the neighboring countries.
As investigations continue into the attack, authorities are looking into the involvement of two local suspects and two Pakistani nationals. Indian security forces have resorted to demolishing homes of suspected militants in the past as part of their anti-militancy measures in Kashmir, leading to further unrest among the local population.
