SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Ron Ely, a versatile actor known for his portrayal of Tarzan on television, has passed away at the age of 86, as confirmed by his daughter Kirsten. Ely, who was born in Hereford, Texas, died on September 29 at his daughter’s home near Santa Barbara.
Apart from his iconic role as Tarzan on the NBC series in the 1960s, Ely had a varied career in both film and television. He also hosted the Miss America pageant and presided over a game show called Face the Music in the early 1980s. Additionally, he starred in films like The Night of the Grizzly and Once Before I Die.
Ely’s journey to becoming Tarzan was unexpected, as he was offered the role after former NFL player Mike Henry abruptly quit due to an injury. Despite initial reservations about being typecast, Ely took on the challenge and proceeded to perform his own stunts during the two-season run of the show.
Following Tarzan, Ely continued to work in the entertainment industry, appearing in various TV shows and films. His talent and dedication to his craft were evident in his diverse roles, ranging from playing a big-game hunter in Tarzan the Hunted to portraying a retired Superman in Superboy.
Tragically, Ely faced a devastating loss in October 2019 when his wife, former Miss Florida Valerie Lundeen Ely, was fatally stabbed by their son, Cameron. Despite the personal hardships he experienced, Ely’s impact on those around him was profound, with his daughter Kirsten describing him as a hero who left a lasting legacy of positivity and inspiration.
In addition to Kirsten, Ely is survived by his other daughter, Kaitland. His contributions to the entertainment industry and the lives of those he touched will be remembered and celebrated for years to come.
