Tokyo, Japan – Director Jon Favreau, Pedro Pascal, and Sigourney Weaver made an appearance at Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo today to unveil more footage from their highly anticipated project, The Mandalorian and Grogu.
The upcoming movie had previously remained shrouded in mystery, with fans eagerly awaiting to see the bounty hunter and baby Yoda embark on a standalone mission. The new footage showcased Weaver’s character, as well as intense battle sequences against stormtroopers. Additionally, viewers were treated to a first look at Jeremy Allen White portraying Jabba’s son, Rotta the Hutt.
Prior glimpses of the film, set for release on May 22, 2026, were offered at D23 in Anaheim last August. Those earlier clips featured iconic AT-ATs from The Empire Strikes Back, the quirky alien tech Babu Frick from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and the character Zeb from the animated series Star Wars: Rebels.
The Mandalorian and Grogu marks the first Star Wars feature since Rise of Skywalker hit theaters six years ago. Initially, Lucasfilm had planned to produce standalone movies centered around core canon characters. However, after the disappointing performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story, the studio shifted its strategy. Instead of focusing solely on theatrical releases, they expanded the Star Wars universe on Disney+ and adopted a more deliberate approach to developing future Star Wars films.
