Toddler killed in playground drive-by shooting

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – A birthday party at Riverland Park turned tragic Sunday afternoon when gunfire erupted, leaving a three-year-old boy dead. The toddler, who was playing on a slide, was caught in the crossfire, sending shockwaves through the community.

A grandfather, visibly shaken, collapsed into the arms of a Fort Lauderdale police officer, struggling to comprehend the sudden loss. The family, who attended the party for a day of joy, is now grappling with unimaginable grief.

The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. at the park on Southwest 10th Street. Police quickly cordoned off the area, marking at least 25 pieces of evidence on the ground. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with dozens of children present when the gunfire broke out.

Neighbors recounted that the party had all the hallmarks of a typical celebration, complete with a bounce house and pavilion setup. The festive atmosphere was shattered by the sound of gunshots, leaving balloons and decorations strewn across the park.

Community members expressed their frustration and sorrow over the senseless violence. “It’s just sad that our people can’t get together and reason,” one neighbor lamented, calling for an end to gun violence.

Investigators believe the shooting was a drive-by involving multiple individuals in two separate vehicles. It remains unclear whether the shooters were targeting each other or someone at the park. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact Broward Crime Stoppers.
