La Quinta, California — A timeline has emerged detailing the tragic incident that led to the death of Jeff Sperbeck, a prominent agent and partner of former NFL quarterback John Elway. Sperbeck, who was 62 years old, fell from a golf cart driven by Elway on April 26, suffering severe injuries that ultimately claimed his life four days later.
Newly revealed details indicate that Sperbeck and his companions, which included family and friends, did not attend the Stagecoach music festival that day, contrary to earlier reports. The group, composed of 10 to 15 individuals, included Elway’s girlfriend, his son Jack, daughter-in-law, and comedian Johnny Devenanzio—popularly known as Johnny Bananas. They opted instead for a quieter evening, departing from a private function at The Madison Club.
The group traveled in several golf carts for a short distance, approximately a quarter-mile, to Elway’s residence on the club’s grounds. Elway was behind the wheel of a single-bench cart. He sat beside his girlfriend, while Sperbeck’s wife, Cori, took the front seat. Sperbeck and Devenanzio were positioned at the back of the cart. Reports suggest that Sperbeck had initially asked his wife to sit in the front, demonstrating a sense of concern for her safety.
Witnesses state that Sperbeck fell backward from the cart, striking his head upon impact. No indications of impaired judgment were noted among those present, and there was reportedly no erratic driving or roughhousing involved during the short journey. Music was playing, but the cart did not hit any bumps before Sperbeck fell.
After the fall, Devenanzio shouted to get Elway’s attention. Cori quickly left the cart to assist her husband, who was still breathing but displayed signs of a serious head injury. Elway immediately called for emergency services, who transported Sperbeck to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. He was placed on life support but tragically passed away on April 30.
In a statement, Cori and the Sperbeck family expressed their profound sorrow, describing Jeff as a loving father, husband, and friend whose presence would be deeply missed. They also thanked those who have reached out in support, requesting privacy during this challenging time.
Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco confirmed that the investigation did not reveal any criminal wrongdoing or mechanical failures related to the golf cart. He noted that medical personnel found no evidence suggesting that Elway was under the influence at the time of the incident, although photos surfaced showing Elway consuming a drink that day.
Bianco characterized the event as a tragic accident, noting that the high profile of some individuals involved has added complexity to the situation. “This appears to be a horrific accident,” he remarked.
Sperbeck’s legacy as an agent included representing Elway and many other clients, and the two had formed a business partnership, launching 7Cellars winery together. In a heartfelt statement, Elway expressed his deep sadness over Sperbeck’s unexpected passing, highlighting the loyalty and friendship Sperbeck brought into his life. He extended condolences to Sperbeck’s family and all who were fortunate enough to know him.
