CINCINNATI — A man charged with aggravated murder after a deadly traffic incident is the father of a teenager who was fatally shot by police just days earlier. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident that claimed the life of a Hamilton County deputy who was directing traffic when struck.
Rodney Hinton Jr., 38, allegedly drove his vehicle toward the deputy with intent to kill, according to prosecutors. Hinton faced a judge on Saturday, flanked by multiple law enforcement officers. The court was informed that evidence and testimony would indicate Hinton deliberately aimed for the deputy. He has been ordered to remain in custody until a subsequent hearing scheduled for Tuesday.
Amid these tragic events, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine expressed his horror at what he termed “an intentional act of violence.” The current investigation has revealed a complex backdrop, starting with the death of Hinton’s son, Ryan Hinton, 18, who was shot by police during a pursuit linked to a reported stolen vehicle just one day prior.
During a distressing meeting at the police chief’s office on Friday morning, Hinton and his family viewed body camera footage of the encounter in which Ryan was killed. Michael Wright, an attorney for the family, described Hinton as visibly shaken and in deep distress, though he did not elaborate on any specific emotions he may have felt during the viewing.
The deputy who lost his life was not identified but was known for his commendable service, having recently retired but continuing to work off-duty assignments. Hamilton County Sheriff Charmaine McGuffey mourned the loss, describing the deputy as well-respected and beloved within the community. “What a tremendous loss we have all suffered,” she said.
Authorities have confirmed that they are continuing to examine the details surrounding the crash. In a statement, Hamilton County Prosecutor Connie Pillich asserted that if the evidence substantiates Hinton’s actions as intentional, she would pursue the maximum penalties available under the law.
Investigations into the incident involving Ryan Hinton revealed that officers pursued him after receiving a report of a stolen car. Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge stated that the officer involved reported being threatened when he claimed that Ryan pointed a gun during the chase. Body camera footage revealed part of the tense encounter, but the images were unclear due to the movement during the incident.
As the community grapples with these consecutive tragedies, both cases have raised questions about the use of force by police and the circumstances leading to such fatal encounters. Authorities continue to stress the importance of thorough investigations into both incidents, seeking to deliver justice for all affected parties.
