Luxembourg City, Luxembourg – Prince Frederik, the youngest son of the Prince and Princess of Nassau, has tragically passed away at the age of 22 after battling a rare genetic illness, POLG Mitochondrial disease, as announced by his father, Prince Robert of Luxembourg.
The POLG Foundation describes the condition as one that depletes the body’s cells of energy, leading to progressive organ dysfunction and failure. Prince Frederik was first diagnosed with this condition at the age of 14, and his family stood by his side throughout his journey.
In a heart-wrenching statement, Prince Robert shared that his beloved son summoned the family to his bedside on “Rare Disease Day” to bid them farewell. Prince Frederik displayed immense strength and courage as he shared his final moments with each family member, leaving them with words of wisdom, kindness, and even humor.
Despite his pain, Prince Frederik’s boundless compassion shone through until the end, as he managed to leave his loved ones with a final laugh to lighten their sorrow. His family, including his parents, siblings, cousins, brother-in-law, and extended family members, were by his side as he peacefully passed away.
