Trump Might Cancel Controversial Patriot Act

( – After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Congress was eager to pass laws that would prevent such a tragedy from happening again. The Patriot Act sailed through the legislative branch and former President George W. Bush signed it into law on October 26, 2001. What started out as a great idea soon became incredibly divisive. Now, President Donald Trump might put an end to the law.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) introduced a bill that would end the Patriot Act. The two are trying to protect American “freedoms and rights that are enshrined in [the] Constitution,” according to the Democrat. Specifically, the Deep State apparatus that allows the government to freely spy on Americans in the name of national security.

Rep. Massie said he’s honored to co-sponsor the bill.

The lawmakers are hoping President Trump, who has spoken out against the Deep State, will get on board. If the president overturns the 2001 law, he will be restoring rights to the American people that many in his own inner circle were denied.
