Authorities confirmed that two police officers were shot and killed early Wednesday morning at a Motel 6 in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi.
According to CBS affiliate WWL-TV, Bay St. Louis Police Chief Tody Schwartz confirmed the officers were Sergeant Steven Robin and Officer Branden Estorffe.
A news release from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation says officers arrived at the Motel 6 before 4:30 a.m. local time on Wednesday. It was then that both officers encountered a woman who shot one officer and injured another before killing herself, according to the state agency.
According to WWL-TV, the first officer died at the scene, while the second officer succumbed to his injuries later in the day.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation said in a statement that it is assessing this critical incident and gathering evidence. It may release additional information later.
Neither the suspect’s name nor the nature of the service call that brought officers to the motel have been released.
Upon completion of the investigation, state bureau agents will submit their findings to the state attorney general.
In a Twitter message, Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves addressed the shooting.
“Two Bay St. Louis Police officers were fatally shot and killed in the line of duty early this morning,” he wrote, adding, “I am devastated by the loss of such brave officers. My prayers are with their families, friends, fellow officers, and the entire community of Bay St. Louis. Across Mississippi, our law enforcement officers make constant and repeated acts of selfless sacrifice to serve their communities every single day.”
