Two officers shot by homeless man

PHOENIX, AZ – Two Phoenix police officers were shot while on duty, marking the 11th incident of gunfire against officers in 2024. The community is reeling from the latest act of violence, which has left one officer in critical condition and another recovering at home.

One officer, who was in stable condition, has been released from the hospital and is now home with his family. However, the other officer remains in critical condition, surrounded by loved ones as he fights for his life. Outside the hospital, community members have gathered to offer prayers and support, tying ribbons as a symbol of solidarity.

The suspect, identified as 41-year-old Saul Ball, has a history of violent encounters with law enforcement. He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday. Ball’s criminal record includes a 2014 conviction in California for battery on an officer and attempting to take an officer’s gun. He has also faced charges in Arizona, including attempted burglary in Navajo County in 2007.

Phoenix police have expressed their frustration and concern over the increasing number of attacks on officers. The president of the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association described the situation as “unconscionable,” emphasizing the immense risks officers face daily.

Ball, who was living in a downtown Phoenix shelter, has been on community supervision since mid-July. His parole was set to end this week, but he now faces a new list of charges. Despite prosecutors presenting video evidence, Ball has chosen not to exercise his right to remain silent.

The community is calling for stricter measures to prevent individuals with violent histories from obtaining firearms. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on supporting the injured officer and addressing the broader issue of gun violence against law enforcement.
