Redmond, Washington — Nintendo has rolled out its long-awaited version 20.0.0 update for the Switch console, marking the most significant upgrade in years. This update introduces an array of features aimed at enhancing user experience and system functionality, including support for virtual game cards and seamless integration with the forthcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
Among the standout features of this upgrade is the introduction of virtual game cards. Previously announced in a recent Nintendo Direct presentation, these digital cards will allow players to access their purchased software and downloadable content, as well as some complimentary titles, through a streamlined interface on the HOME Menu. Users can now virtually load and eject these game cards between two different Nintendo Switch systems, enriching the flexibility of game access. Moreover, players can lend virtual game cards to others within their Nintendo Account family group, expanding social gameplay options.
Additionally, the update introduces a GameShare feature, which enables compatible software to be shared between a Nintendo Switch 2 and nearby systems. This feature, initiated from the Nintendo Switch 2, allows local multiplayer experiences without being limited to a single device, although restrictions apply to older Switch models.
User privacy and security see enhancements as well, with new user-verification settings that allow users to protect access to the virtual game card menu. Players can set up a PIN requirement or sign in through their Nintendo Account for added security, ensuring that their game library remains private.
The update also includes online license settings. Once activated, players can use their downloaded games and DLC while connected to the internet, even if the virtual game card isn’t loaded. This feature aims to improve accessibility and convenience, especially for gamers who frequently switch between devices.
Other changes feature a revamped appearance for the Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Switch News icons, as well as a more user-friendly save data transfer option. The updated “Transfer Your Save Data” menu allows players to select and transfer multiple save files simultaneously, making it easier to maintain game progress across devices.
For users deciding to transition from their current Nintendo Switch to the planned Switch 2, a new system transfer option ensures that this process is seamless. Players can transfer system data through local communication, and if immediate transfer isn’t feasible, they have the option to upload their system transfer data to a dedicated server for retrieval later.
This latest update represents a significant leap for the Nintendo Switch, with the previous update, version 19.0.1, released back in October. As Nintendo continues to innovate and expand its game library, players can expect a more collaborative and enriched gaming environment, ultimately enhancing the overall experience in the ever-evolving landscape of gaming.
