US Navy Reports Multiple Deaths on Aircraft Carrier

( – One US sailor’s death is a big deal. The death of three sailors assigned to the same carrier is unheard of. Unfortunately, this recently happened on the USS George Washington.

According to reports, the Navy ship was on dry dock in Newport News, Virginia when the deaths occurred. On April 9, Petty Officer 3rd Class Mika’il Rayshawn Sharp, assigned as a Retail Services Specialist, was found dead of an apparent suicide at an off-base location in Hampton, Virginia near where the nuclear-capable aircraft carrier was undergoing work and its mid-life refueling.

The next day, Natasha Huffman, assigned as an Interior Communications Electrician 3rd Class, was found dead at a separate off-base location in Hampton. The state chief medical examiner’s office confirmed her death was also a suicide. Her mother, Kathleen Krull, confirmed her daughter’s death in a Facebook post, saying it doesn’t “feel real” that her “baby girl is gone.” Days later, on April 15, crewmembers found an unidentified sailor unresponsive on the ship. The sailor was transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center where the service member died.

The Navy hasn’t released any other information about the deaths. However, Naval Air Force Atlantic Spokesperson Commander Robert Myers said there’s no indication the deaths are related to one another. Further, the Navy brought in counselors, chaplains, leadership, and psychologists to speak with the other crew members and make sure they have the support they need to deal with the deaths.
