San Francisco, CA – In a move to enhance authenticity and trust on its platform, Bluesky is set to introduce a new verification system starting today. This system will feature the iconic blue check marks synonymous with verified accounts on social media platforms, a concept originally popularized by Twitter.
Bluesky, which saw exponential growth after its public launch in early 2024, previously relied on a unique self-verification process where users could authenticate themselves by incorporating custom domains into their web handles. However, the company is now transitioning to a more proactive and standard verification process, with the Bluesky team manually verifying notable accounts and assigning blue check marks accordingly.
CEO Jay Graber emphasized that the verification rollout will be gradual as the feature stabilizes. Eventually, a public form will be available for users to request verification. Initially, the focus will be on verifying accounts of government officials, news organizations, journalists, and celebrities to combat the rising issue of impersonation on the platform.
Bluesky’s decision to introduce a verification system akin to Twitter’s original model may not be groundbreaking, but it reflects a strategic move to enhance user trust and credibility. The use of blue check marks has become a universally recognized symbol for verified accounts, indicating legitimacy and authenticity.
In addition to the traditional verification approach, Bluesky is also introducing a “trusted verifier” status for select reputable organizations. These trusted verifiers will be marked with a distinct scalloped blue check on their Bluesky accounts. Initial partners include prestigious publications like The New York Times and WIRED, with more collaborations on the horizon.
Users will be able to view which organizations have verified an account by clicking on the blue check mark. This transparency aims to further build trust and ensure the legitimacy of verified accounts on Bluesky. The introduction of the trusted verifier system aligns with Bluesky’s commitment to decentralization and strengthens its efforts to combat fraud and impersonation.
As Bluesky users anticipate the rollout of official blue check marks, the platform’s evolution towards a more secure and credible environment is evident. By prioritizing verification and partnering with trusted organizations, Bluesky is taking significant steps to promote transparency and authenticity across its user base.
