(AbsoluteNews.com) – When parents send their children to school, it’s supposed to be a safe environment for learning with trusted teachers leading the charge. Lately, that doesn’t seem to always be the case in America. On November 17, a Miami-Dade courtroom exacted justice on former high school teacher Tom Privett who sexually battered a girl when she was just a 14-year-old student. The woman, now 23, shouted expletives at the man, calling him a “monster” as police took him away in handcuffs after sentencing.
She described the grooming process he followed when he was her teacher, breaking the young girl down in order to manipulate and assault her.
She waited five years to confront Tom Privett, her former high school teacher, the man who groomed and manipulated her on campus.
“You f—ing monster!” she cried loudly. “F— you!”https://t.co/ijt8Eyzt4e

Privett taught at South Dade High for about 30 years, coaching the cross-country team, and leading mock trials for student law practice. During his trial, another former student surfaced with stories of her abuse by the retired teacher. Apparently, people questioned his conduct for years, but he continued to hold his position at the school.
Unfortunately, this isn’t a new story. Incidents of teachers behaving inappropriately or sexually assaulting students seem woven into the fabric of the school system. Just in November, cases in New York, Minnesota, and California appeared with accounts of teachers abusing their powers. Stopping the growing problem is essential in making schools a safe place for children to learn.
Privett will serve 2 years in prison, 2 more under house arrest, and 20 years on probation. He is 72 years old.
