Ukrainian forces pursue counteroffensive around Kharkiv; Russia rehearses ‘Victory Day’ parade – CNBC
Each day of this brutal, unprovoked war creates new hopes for an end and further misery when it fails to. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he would accept a peace deal with Russia only if Moscow pulled back its forces to their positions before the war started.
It appears that soon Russia may have no choice but to withdraw. The Ukraine conflict is heavily affecting some of Russia’s most capable units. The U.K.’s Defense Ministry said it would take considerable time and expense to reconstitute its armed forces following this invasion.
Ukraine’s president said influential states were involved in a diplomatic effort to save defenders barricaded inside the steelworks. The defenders have vowed not to surrender.
On Saturday, pro-Russian forces evacuated 50 more civilians from the besieged Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol, bringing the number of civilians evacuated to 176.
Ukrainian forces are pursuing a counteroffensive near the northeast Kharkiv region; the Institute for the Study of War says Ukrainian forces are advancing north and east of Kharkiv. It tells the counterattack could soon push Russian troops out of the city. Russian forces have destroyed a large stockpile of military equipment.
Meanwhile, Russian soldiers prepare for Victory Day commemorations on May 9, which marks the 77th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II. Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed to have struck 18 military facilities in Ukraine’s northeast Kharkiv region as a claim to ‘progress’ on their ‘special operation to free Ukraine.’
Only time will tell if Russia quietly pulls back forces and claims an artificial victory or commits to further atrocities and war crimes. We hope to have some clarification after May 9th.
