Los Angeles, California – Fans of the hit musical Wicked can rejoice as they won’t have to wait long to return to the magical world of Oz.
The much-anticipated second part of Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of the beloved Broadway show is slated to premiere on November 21, 2025, a year after the release of the first film. Wicked: Part Two will continue the story of the iconic witches of Oz, featuring Ariana Grande as Glinda the Good Witch and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba the Wicked Witch of the West.
The first film, released on November 22, shattered records for a musical adaptation, raking in an estimated $114 million at the box office. Grande and Erivo, who delivered show-stopping performances, were reportedly paid equally for their roles, defying rumors of pay disparity. Based on the 2003 musical inspired by Gregory Maguire’s novel, Wicked delves into the untold stories of the witches of Oz.
The screenplay for Chu’s movie was penned by Winnie Holzman, the original stage production’s book writer, in collaboration with Dana Fox. Renowned composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz adapted the musical for the big screen. Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, who originated the roles of Elphaba and Glinda on Broadway, made surprise cameo appearances in the film’s “One Short Day” sequence.
Chu’s adaptation of Wicked remains faithful to the stage musical, with little deviation from the original plot. The director shared insights into his vision for the movie, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the essence of the stage show while splitting it into two films for a more immersive experience.
Filming for both parts of Wicked spanned over 160 days, with production momentarily halted before completion due to unforeseen circumstances. The second act of Wicked promises a darker turn, as the beloved characters face complex challenges and painful choices.
As Wicked: Part Two’s release date approaches, fans eagerly await the continuation of the mesmerizing journey that unfolds behind the emerald curtain of Oz. Stay tuned for more updates on the highly-anticipated sequel as it nears its debut in theaters.
