LOS ANGELES (AP) – Television game show host Wink Martindale, known for his work on popular shows like “Gambit” and “Tic-Tac-Dough,” has passed away at the age of 91. Martindale’s publicist, Brian Mayes, confirmed that the beloved host died on Tuesday at Eisenhower Health in Rancho Mirage, California after battling lymphoma for a year.

Considered a pioneer in the game show industry, Martindale hosted shows that became instant hits, such as “Gambit” which debuted in 1972 alongside other iconic shows like “The Price is Right” and “The Joker’s Wild.” His signature approach of keeping game shows simple yet engaging resonated with audiences, leading to the show’s success.

Despite the success of “Gambit,” the landscape of game shows shifted with the introduction of “Wheel of Fortune” in 1975, ultimately leading to the end of “Gambit” in 1976. Martindale quickly bounced back with the show “Tic-Tac-Dough,” where he presided over memorable moments like Navy Lt. Thom McKee’s impressive 88-game winning streak, earning over $300,000 in cash and prizes.

Martindale’s career in the entertainment industry spanned decades, showcasing his versatility as a radio DJ and game show host.
