Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition Analysis – A Switch Upgrade Worth Subscribing to Nintendo Life For!

Los Angeles, CA – Tech experts Digital Foundry recently released an analysis of the new version of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition on the Nintendo Switch. In a video review, narrator John Linneman referred to the transition from the Wii U to the Switch as the “end of an era” for game conversions.

According to Linneman, the Switch version of Xenoblade Chronicles X offers significant improvements over the original Wii U release. The game now features dynamic resolution that reaches native 1080p, a major upgrade from the Wii U’s maximum resolution of 720p. Additionally, features such as motion blurring, distant detail, and shadow effects have all been enhanced or maintained in the new version. In particular, locations in New Los Angeles showcase significantly more detail on the Switch compared to the Wii U.

Character models have also received a makeover in the Switch port of the game. Linneman highlighted improvements in facial features, eye shape, facial structure, and hairstyles, which he described as “off-putting” in the original Wii U version. The user interface (UI) has also been revamped, making it more user-friendly in the new release.

Despite these improvements, Linneman pointed out areas where the new version falls short. Pop-in issues are still present, especially in city areas, and texture filtering remains subpar. Additionally, cutscenes in the Switch port exhibit boosted black levels, resulting in slightly washed-out scenes when compared to the original. However, these issues are not considered dealbreakers.

In terms of performance, both the Wii U and Switch versions of Xenoblade Chronicles X maintain a consistent frame rate of 30fps, with occasional minor dips. Interestingly, a hidden 60fps mode in the game files hints at potential performance upgrades for future iterations of the Switch.

Overall, the improvements in the Switch version of Xenoblade Chronicles X have been likened to those seen in remastered games like Metroid Prime. With enhanced character models and detailed environments, the Switch port offers a compelling experience for both newcomers and fans of the original Wii U release. If you missed out on playing Xenoblade Chronicles X on the Wii U, the Switch version is definitely worth a try.
