Avian Flu Outbreak in Douglas County: Backyard Flock Depopulated – Important Information for Poultry Owners

Lawrence, Kansas – A backyard flock in Douglas County has been euthanized and disposed of properly after being diagnosed with avian flu, the health department announced. The Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health department was alerted to a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a noncommercial backyard flock located in Baldwin City.

Working in collaboration with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Kansas Department of Agriculture, the health department has taken measures to address the situation. Individuals who were in contact with the affected flock before and during the euthanization process are being monitored for any signs or symptoms of illness according to guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Despite the presence of avian flu in the flock, the health department reassured the public that the risk to their health is low. They advised people to avoid direct contact with sick or dead wild birds, poultry, or other animals, and to maintain a safe distance. If contact is necessary, wearing proper protective gear such as gloves and face masks is highly recommended.

To address any concerns or signs of avian flu in poultry or domestic birds, owners are encouraged to seek guidance from a veterinarian or contact the department of agriculture. The Douglas County case marks the 33rd case of avian flu in Kansas this year, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture.
