Basilica Unveils Groundbreaking Initiatives for 400th Anniversary: A Multilingual Journey, Exclusive Access, and the Stunning ‘Michelangelus’ Font Await Pilgrims!

VATICAN CITY — In anticipation of the 400th anniversary of St. Peter’s Basilica, Cardinal Mauro Gambetti announced a range of initiatives aimed at enhancing the experience for pilgrims and visitors alike. The yearlong celebration is set to commence on February 20, culminating in a special Mass officiated by Pope Leo XIV on November 18.

During a recent press conference at the Holy See Press Office, Cardinal Gambetti, who serves as the Archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica and as President of the Fabbrica di San Pietro, detailed the innovative initiatives. These efforts aim to harmonize spirituality, culture, and technology within the sacred space.

One of the key features of this celebration will be the introduction of a multilingual liturgical platform. In collaboration with the Dicastery for Communication and the company Translated, which specializes in AI-driven language solutions, this platform will provide real-time translations during important religious ceremonies. Pilgrims can scan QR codes on-site to access audio and text in their preferred language, supporting a more inclusive experience without the need for specialized apps or equipment.

Cardinal Gambetti also emphasized that previously restricted sections of the Basilica will now be open to the public. Included in this exciting development are the entire terrace and the Octagonal Halls, which contain significant architectural models and artworks from the Basilica’s museum. To manage visitor flow and protect the spiritual sanctity of the site, a new booking system named Smart Pass will be implemented.

The Cardinal highlighted that the focus of the year is not just on marking a historical date but also on revitalizing the spirit of St. Peter’s Basilica. To further this mission, he announced “Spiritual Elevations,” a series of weekly prayer sessions and musical offerings. Additionally, special pastoral lectures and scriptural reflections on the figure of Saint Peter will take place throughout the year.

A memorable pilgrimage route will also be established, retracing the steps of Saints Peter and Paul in Rome. As part of the celebrations, a theatrical performance is planned on June 29 to commemorate the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul.

Another notable initiative is the “Beyond the Visible” project, a partnership between the Fabric of Saint Peter and the multinational energy company Eni. This venture aims to implement ongoing structural monitoring of the Basilica, ensuring its stability and preserving its architectural integrity for future generations.

Lastly, a new institutional font called “Michelangelus” will be released, inspired by the handwriting of Michelangelo and developed by Studio Gusto. This font will be included in Microsoft Office, providing a contemporary link to the Basilica’s rich artistic heritage.

Cardinal Gambetti concluded by reflecting on the importance of renewal in the life of the Basilica. He noted that, while Pope Julius II had to rebuild in the past, today’s advancements in technology allow for rejuvenation without the need for demolition, ensuring that St. Peter’s Basilica continues to embrace pilgrims for years to come.
