Long Beach, California – Rocket Lab USA, Inc. has secured its largest contract to date with the U.S. Space Development Agency, significantly enhancing its role in the national security sector. The contract, valued at $816 million, tasks the company with designing and manufacturing 18 satellites as part of the Tracking Layer Tranche 3 program, a pivotal component of the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture.
This contract empowers Rocket Lab to deploy advanced satellite technology aimed at worldwide missile detection and tracking capabilities, including for hypersonic threats. The award comprises a base contract of $806 million, supplemented by potential add-ons that could reach an additional $10.45 million. Each satellite will incorporate Rocket Lab’s next-generation Phoenix infrared sensor, crafted to address the evolving demands of missile defense.
Central to the disruption in traditional defense contracting is Rocket Lab’s vertically integrated manufacturing model. This approach allows the company to control the production of critical satellite components, from propulsion systems to avionics, ensuring both cost effectiveness and rapid scaling.
