New York State has been hit by a concerning outbreak of listeria infections linked to sliced deli counter meat, resulting in a total of seven cases in the state. The outbreak, which has spanned across 12 states, has claimed the lives of two individuals and led to hospitalizations for more than a dozen others, according to health officials.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported a total of 28 cases connected to this particular strain of listeria. While New York State has seen the highest number of cases, the outbreak has had repercussions in various locations, including Illinois and New Jersey, where the two fatalities occurred.
The infected individuals, all of whom required hospitalization, reported consuming deli meats like turkey, liverwurst, and ham that were sliced at supermarket and grocery store delis. As of now, there have been no known instances of illness resulting from prepackaged deli meats, as highlighted by the CDC.
Victims of the outbreak have ranged in age from 32 to 94 years old, with the median age being 75. It was noted that more men than women and more white individuals than other racial groups were impacted by the listeria infections, prompting further investigations by the CDC and other relevant authorities.
Listeria is a serious infection caused by the consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, headaches, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, seizures, diarrhea, and vomiting, typically occurring within 24 hours of exposure but possibly manifesting up to 10 weeks later.
While most individuals recover within three days from listeria infections, a small percentage can experience severe illness. Annually, approximately 1,600 cases are reported, resulting in around 260 fatalities, highlighting the significance of addressing outbreaks promptly and effectively to minimize risks.
Certain populations, such as pregnant individuals, newborns, older adults, and those with compromised immune systems, are particularly vulnerable to severe listeria infections, underscoring the importance of preventive measures and swift responses to outbreaks.
