CHICKASHA, Okla. — A 12-year-old boy reported missing in Oklahoma has been found safe, just days after his mother and stepfather were arrested on allegations of child abuse, according to state authorities.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation announced Sunday that the boy was discovered near Cement, roughly 24 miles from his home in Chickasha. Hunter McKee, an agency spokesperson, expressed relief at the outcome during a news conference, saying, “After days of searching, after hope and prayer, we can say that the outcome that we were all hoping for has come true.”
Authorities revealed that the boy is in “good spirits” and has been assessed as being in “pretty good shape” following his discovery. He was located around noon by volunteers from the United Cajun Navy, a group that participates in rescue missions. Hundreds of community members had rallied to assist in the search efforts, which intensified after the issuance of an endangered missing advisory by local police.
The child had last been seen on January 2. Investigators did not provide specific details on how he ended up in the area where he was found. McKee noted that the boy has since been placed in the care of the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, with steps being taken to ensure he is placed in a safe environment.
The boy’s mother, Kimberly Cole, and stepfather, George Cole, were arrested earlier in the week on various charges, including child abuse and conspiracy. The arrests followed a series of investigations into the pair, which included the execution of search warrants and interviews that revealed signs of harm to the child.
As the case unfolds, local authorities are working closely with the district attorney’s office to process the charges against the couple. Meanwhile, McKee has emphasized the importance of ensuring that the boy receives the protective care he needs, stating, “We’re going to work closely with DHS to make sure that [the boy] is put into a safe home, which he deserves.”
The discovery of the boy has brought a wave of relief to the community, where residents had come together in hopes of a positive resolution. The swift response and involvement of volunteers showcased the community’s commitment to safeguarding its children.
