London, England- The United States Geological Survey has reported that tsunami warnings issued in the aftermath of a powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake in the Caribbean Sea have now been cancelled. The earthquake, with its epicenter approximately 20 miles north of Honduras and 130 miles southwest of the Cayman Islands, struck on Saturday evening local time. Initially, the US Tsunami Warning System had issued alerts to multiple countries about potential waves reaching up to three meters in height. However, it was later confirmed that the threat had subsided.
Following the earthquake, advisories were also issued for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands by the Tsunami Warning System, which were subsequently lifted. The Cayman Islands government had taken precautions by advising residents in coastal areas to move inland through a message on its website. As of now, there is no clear indication of any movement or damage on land due to the earthquake.
This recent earthquake is noted as the largest to hit the region since 2021, when Haiti experienced a 7.2 magnitude earthquake. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration mentioned that about three hours after the seismic event, US authorities cautioned about the possibility of minor sea level fluctuations up to 30cm. Despite this, the overall threat was considered to have passed.
USGS indicated that significant earthquakes in this particular location of the plate boundary are not uncommon. In 2018, a 7.5-magnitude earthquake in close proximity caused some damage and a small tsunami. Fortunately, the remote nature of these earthquakes helps to limit potential damages from shaking. Additionally, the US National Tsunami Warning Centre confirmed that there are currently no alerts for the mainland US coast.
