MINNEAPOLIS — The ongoing immigration enforcement operation in Minnesota is winding down, according to Tom Homan, the White House border czar. Homan announced that while the major crackdown is concluding, a small federal security force will remain in the area temporarily to ensure public safety and maintain coordination with local law enforcement.
Homan revealed on CBS’ “Face the Nation” that the operation, which has resulted in the removal of over 1,000 individuals, is set to conclude soon. Additional removals are expected in the coming days, allowing federal agents to return to their standard operational footprint. However, he clarified that some agents would remain to investigate allegations of fraud involving daycare funding and to address disruptions caused by anti-ICE protests in the area.
The remaining security forces will serve a supportive role, responding to incidents where agents may encounter hostile situations or face significant public pushback. “This small contingent will help ensure that our agreements with local law enforcement are upheld and respond to any threats to public safety,” Homan stated. He expressed hope that this security presence would be short-lived.
This enforcement effort, known as “Operation Metro Surge,” has faced considerable backlash from community members and activists. The operation intensified after two U.S. citizens were shot and killed during enforcement actions, leading to a wave of protests and heightened tensions in the state.
Homan also addressed the recent shutdown at the Department of Homeland Security, triggered by congressional impasse over agency funding. While he distanced himself from the negotiations, he criticized some Democratic proposals, particularly those aimed at restricting ICE agents from wearing masks to protect their identities during operations. Homan argued that anonymity is crucial for the safety of law enforcement personnel.
The debate over officers’ visibility continues to be a contentious issue. Homan maintained that these measures are in place to safeguard agents from potential threats, although specifics regarding incidents related to their exposed identities have not been disclosed.
As the operation draws to a close, many local residents are left grappling with the impact of the heightened immigration enforcement. Community leaders and advocates are now calling for more transparency and accountability from federal authorities, aiming to foster a safer environment for all residents.
