Miami, Florida — Filmmaker Joseph Kosinski is set to direct a film adaptation of the iconic television series “Miami Vice” for Universal Pictures, according to industry sources. This announcement follows the tremendous success of Kosinski’s recent blockbuster, “Top Gun: Maverick,” which grossed $1.49 billion globally.
Screenwriter Dan Gilroy, known for his work on “Nightcrawler,” is penning the script. Dylan Clark, who served as a producer for “The Batman,” will oversee production through his company Dylan Clark Productions, while Kosinski will collaborate through his company, Monolith.
“Miami Vice” originally aired from 1984 to 1990, created by Anthony Yerkovich and featuring stars Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as undercover officers navigating the vibrant Miami nightlife in their signature pastel suits. Michael Mann, who was also the executive producer, noted that the series aimed to redefine television norms of its time and has become a cultural touchstone since its debut. In 2006, Mann directed a feature film adaptation starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell, which performed well at the box office, earning $163.7 million worldwide.
Kosinski’s interest in revitalizing “Miami Vice” has been brewing since last year. However, this project will not be his next undertaking; he is currently focused on a UFO conspiracy thriller that generated significant buzz during an Apple bidding war in March. Prior to that, he is slated to release a racing drama starring Brad Pitt, set to premiere in June.
Following the triumph of “Top Gun: Maverick,” Kosinski has emerged as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after directors, having previously helmed films like “Oblivion” and “Tron: Legacy.” He is represented by several agencies, including CAA and Untitled.
Gilroy’s impressive resume also includes titles like “The Bourne Legacy” and contributions to the popular series “Andor,” further solidifying his reputation in the industry. He is also represented by CAA and LBI.
Dylan Clark, whose credits include the acclaimed “Planet of the Apes” series, continues to be a formidable force in production, also represented by CAA and 42West.
As the project progresses, it is clear that “Miami Vice” holds a cherished place in entertainment history, and Kosinski’s vision may introduce the legendary series to a new generation of fans.
