Minnesota police are mourning the loss of two officers and a paramedic after a shooting at a family home in Burnsville. The incident occurred during a domestic abuse call in the early hours of Sunday morning. The gunman, barricaded inside the home with seven children, opened fire as officers attempted to negotiate with him. The victims were identified as officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge, both 27, and paramedic Adam Finseth, 40. The attacker also died in the incident.
Burnsville police chief Tanya Schwartz expressed the pain felt by the entire force, while Minnesota Governor Tim Walz described it as a “tragic loss for our state.” Authorities were called to the address in Burnsville, a city about 15 miles south of central Minneapolis, at about 01:50 local time. The officers were responding to a report of a domestic situation involving an armed man. Upon arrival, it was discovered that seven children, aged two to 15, were also barricaded inside the property.
Negotiations with the gunman took place for some time before he opened fire, resulting in the deaths of the three victims and non-life-threatening injuries to a fourth policeman named Adam Medlicott. The attacker, who has not been named, was found dead at about 08:00, allowing the other occupants of the home to escape unharmed. Neighbors in the area described their fear as the incident unfolded, with one resident recalling the sight of a large police presence as it became clear that “something bad was taking place.”
An investigation into the incident is underway, while tributes have been paid by emergency workers in the local area and beyond. Additionally, a candlelit vigil was held for the victims on Sunday night. This tragic event comes just days after another mass shooting in Missouri, during which one person was killed and 21 others were injured. These incidents serve as a sobering reminder of the ongoing issue of gun violence in the United States.
