`Trump Fight Back: Lawyers Request New Trial After $83m Verdict`

New York – Former President Donald Trump’s attorneys have filed for a new trial in the defamation case filed by writer E Jean Carroll, just as he unofficially clinched the Republican party’s presidential candidacy. The lawyers argue that the $83 million awarded to Carroll was excessive and should be reduced.

Trump’s legal team, led by Alina Habba, contends that the compensatory and punitive damages awarded to Carroll by the jury are disproportionate. They claim that punitive damages should not exceed $36.6 million, especially if the compensatory aspect of the judgment is lowered.

In court documents, Trump’s lawyers also argued that crucial evidence was excluded from the case and that the jury received incorrect instructions. They believe that the limitations placed on Trump’s testimony affected the jury’s decision, warranting a new trial.

The former president’s defense emphasized that Judge Lewis Kaplan’s ruling to strike Trump’s testimony concerning his state of mind during certain statements made while in office was biased. They argued that Trump’s testimony was essential in determining common-law malice.

Furthermore, Trump faces a separate $454 million judgment for inflating his property values to secure more favorable bank loans and insurance rates. He also awaits legal proceedings regarding a payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election, potentially affecting his campaign activities.

Attorneys representing E Jean Carroll were not immediately available for comment on Trump’s request for a new trial in the defamation case. The legal battles surrounding Trump’s financial dealings and alleged past misconduct continue to draw attention and scrutiny as he embarks on a new political campaign journey.
