The boy’s mother said he was asleep when he was wounded and has since been released from the hospital.
ATLANTA, GA — A 13-year-old boy was shot four times early Sunday at an apartment complex in southeast Atlanta, according to local news reports, as police investigated the shooting and searched for information about what led to the gunfire.
The shooting occurred at the Capitol Vanira Apartments near Hank Aaron Drive and Vanira Avenue. The boy’s mother told Atlanta News First that her son was asleep when he was shot. She said he was taken to a hospital and later released and is expected to recover.
Atlanta police had not announced a suspect or a possible motive as of Sunday. Authorities also had not released a detailed account of the circumstances surrounding the shooting or said whether anyone else was injured.
Neighbors told WSB-TV that they heard numerous gunshots at the apartment complex. A reporter at the scene saw more than two dozen evidence markers placed around the area as investigators processed the scene. Evidence markers can be used to identify locations where shell casings or other potential evidence are found.
Police were also examining nearby locations that investigators believed could be connected to the shooting, WSB-TV reported. Authorities had not publicly explained what those possible connections were.
The boy’s name has not been released. News organizations generally limit identification of minors who are victims of violent crime when their identities have not otherwise been made public by authorities or family members.
The investigation remained active Sunday. Police had not publicly identified a suspect, announced an arrest or released information about a possible motive as investigators worked to determine what happened.
