Police are searching for three people after Daremiah Banks was fatally shot early Sunday near K Street in Southeast Washington.
WASHINGTON, DC — An 18-year-old woman was shot and killed early Sunday in Southeast Washington, and police are searching for three people who investigators say left the area in a silver sedan.
The Metropolitan Police Department identified the woman as Daremiah Banks of Northwest Washington. First District officers responded to the 1100 block of K Street SE at about 5:26 a.m. Aug. 9 after receiving a report of a shooting. Officers found Banks suffering from a gunshot wound, police said. D.C. Fire and EMS personnel responded, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting happened in a residential area near the Navy Yard and several blocks from the Potomac Avenue Metro station. Police have not announced a motive or said what may have happened immediately before the gunfire. No arrests had been announced as of early Tuesday.
Surveillance video obtained by NBC Washington shows several people getting out of a vehicle parked on 11th Street shortly before gunfire was directed toward Banks and others nearby. The video shows Banks falling as other people run east along K Street. Police said they are looking for three people connected to a silver sedan.
A police report cited by NBC Washington said another person was grazed by a bullet during the shooting. The report also indicated that one of the firearms used was a rifle. Authorities have not publicly identified that person or reported a serious injury connected to the grazing wound.
A nearby resident told NBC Washington that his parked vehicle was struck several times by gunfire. News4 reported counting at least 11 bullet holes in the vehicle. Investigators were working to determine the make and model of the car used by those who fled, according to a law enforcement source cited by the station.
Police have released few details about why Banks may have been targeted or whether investigators believe she knew the people involved. Authorities have also not publicly identified the three people they are seeking. The Metropolitan Police Department said the case remains a homicide investigation.
Police are offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for a homicide in the District. Investigators continue to seek information about the K Street shooting as they work to identify the people who fled the area.
