A mentally ill man who thinks he is a woman shoots both parents

WASHINGTON CITY, UT – A transgender woman accused of fatally shooting her parents in their Utah home and attempting to kill her brother was apprehended after an extensive manhunt this week. Mia Bailey, 28, was arrested Wednesday and faces 11 felony charges related to the double homicide of her parents, Joseph, 70, and Gail Bailey, 69, and the attempted murder of her brother, according to local police.

“We have some good news. We have the suspect in custody,” St. George Police Officer Tiffany Mitchell announced in a Facebook live broadcast, reassuring residents of Bloomington Hills and Fort Pierce that they were no longer required to shelter in place. “Everyone is safe. No one else was injured.”

Authorities allege that Bailey broke into her parents’ home around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, shooting her father in the head and her mother multiple times. She then reportedly targeted her brother and his wife, who had locked themselves in a bedroom. Bailey fired through the door but did not fatally wound them.

After ensuring her parents were dead, Bailey fled the scene in a yellow Kia Soul. She was cornered by police about seven miles away in a St. George neighborhood the following day. Bailey surrendered peacefully, dropping her firearm before being handcuffed by a dozen armed officers.

Court documents reveal that Bailey expressed no remorse for her actions, telling police she would “do it again” and that she “hated” her parents. She had legally changed her name and gender in August 2023, following a petition filed in July.

The incident has left the community in shock, as details of Bailey’s actions and motivations continue to emerge. The police investigation is ongoing, with authorities piecing together the events that led to the tragic killings.
