Ageless Beauty: 60-Year-Old Miss Universe Contestant Inspires Shift in Beauty Standards with Historic Run

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – Despite falling short of winning the Miss Argentina title, 60-year-old Alejandra Rodriguez made history by becoming the first sexagenarian to compete in the Miss Universe franchise. The attorney and journalist from Buenos Aires captured global attention when she was crowned Miss Buenos Aires in April.

Although she did not secure the Miss Argentina title, Rodriguez’s participation marked a significant shift in the perception of beauty in society. Winning the “best face” category, she emphasized that her journey is just the beginning of a positive change in how beauty is viewed.

Rodriguez’s entry into the pageant was made possible after the Miss Universe organization revised its age restrictions. Prior to 2023, contestants had to be between 18 and 28 years old, but starting in 2024, there is no upper age limit – a change welcomed by Rodriguez as a step towards inclusivity.

The pageant’s efforts to modernize also included allowing married or divorced women, as well as those who have given birth or are pregnant, to participate for the first time in its more than 70-year history. Rodriguez highlighted the expanding boundaries of beauty standards, reflecting a more diverse and inclusive representation in Miss Universe.

Despite not clinching the crown, Rodriguez’s presence challenged traditional stereotypes related to beauty, age, shape, and weight. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to pave the way for others who may not fit conventional pageant norms.

The winner of the Miss Argentina title, Magalí Benejam, who at 29 would have been deemed too old to compete under the previous rules, represented a shift in the pageant’s recognition of a broader range of women’s experiences and accomplishments. Overall, Rodriguez’s groundbreaking participation signals a step towards embracing greater diversity and acceptance in beauty pageants.
