AirTrain Summer Sale: Port Authority Slashes Prices to Ease JFK Airport Traffic Chaos

New York City, NY – The Port Authority in New York City is offering a summer discount on AirTrain tickets to JFK Airport. Starting July 1st until Labor Day, travelers can take advantage of half-price fares on the AirTrain to help alleviate vehicle traffic during heavy construction at the airport. The reduced fare of $4.50 is applicable for passengers using the AirTrain from the Howard Beach or Jamaica stations.

To further encourage the use of public transportation, the Port Authority suggests travelers take the Long Island Railroad from Grand Central Madison, Penn Station, or Atlantic Terminal to reach the Jamaica station in approximately 20 minutes. Additionally, those driving to the airport are advised to be dropped off at the Lefferts Blvd. station, where short-term parking and the AirTrain are free of charge.

Port Authority Executive Director, Rick Cotton, hinted at the possibility of waiving all fees for the AirTrain if congestion from the $19 billion construction at the airport became unmanageable. “We strongly urge travelers to utilize the various train and subway options available when traveling to or from the airport,” Cotton stated in a recent announcement.

Passengers choosing to use the AirTrain can conveniently pay with a contactless credit card or smartphone using OMNY. Despite easy access, some have raised concerns about fare evasion as reported incidents at turnstiles remain unresolved.

As the Port Authority disclosed a record-high of 13 million passengers in May, construction efforts remain in full swing with the construction of two new terminals and the overhaul of roadways surrounding JFK Airport. The project, slated for completion in 2030, poses temporary disruptions expected to intensify throughout the summer.

The summer promotion aims to incentivize travelers to utilize the AirTrain and public transportation options to reduce congestion and facilitate a smoother travel experience to and from JFK Airport. By offering discounted fares and urging the use of alternative modes of transport, the Port Authority seeks to alleviate traffic concerns during a period of extensive construction and renovations at the airport.
