Authorities said the suspect fled after a dispute turned violent inside an employee-only parking garage.
MELROSE PARK, IL — A 27-year-old Amazon employee was identified as the man killed Thursday morning in a shooting inside an employee parking garage at the company’s Melrose Park delivery station, authorities said.
Travion R. Taylor died after the shooting at the Amazon building at 1825 5th Ave., according to authorities. Police said the gunfire followed a personal dispute between Taylor and another man. The suspect left the scene and had not been arrested in the hours after the shooting, while local and regional investigators reviewed video and searched for evidence.
Officers were called shortly after 9 a.m. Thursday to the Amazon facility’s parking garage, which officials said is accessible only to employees. Taylor was found with gunshot wounds and taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood in critical condition. Authorities said he later died during surgery. A Melrose Park spokesperson said the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident tied to a dispute, not a broader attack on the facility or workers. No other injuries were reported, though officials said about 60 employees were at the site when the shooting happened.
Police recovered two bullet casings at the scene, authorities said. Investigators were also reviewing surveillance footage with Amazon personnel to identify the person who fired the shots. Officials said one camera showed two vehicles leaving the garage after the shooting. The suspect’s name had not been released, and police had not announced charges. A village spokesperson said the person believed to be the shooter fled in a car. Authorities did not immediately release a detailed description of that vehicle or say whether Taylor and the suspect both worked at the facility.
Amazon spokesperson Lex Evans called the shooting “a senseless tragedy” and said the company’s thoughts were with Taylor’s family, friends and co-workers at the Melrose Park delivery station. Evans said the delivery station had been deemed safe and that Amazon added security after the shooting. The company said it was supporting police as the investigation continued. Officials did not report a continuing threat at the building. The site remained part of an active homicide investigation as detectives worked through video, witness statements and physical evidence from the garage.
The Melrose Park Police Department is leading the investigation with help from the West Suburban Major Crime Task Force and the Cook County sheriff’s office. The task force often assists local departments in serious violent crime investigations in the western suburbs. Police had not said when more information would be released. The Cook County medical examiner identified Taylor after the shooting, but officials had not released a ruling beyond the reported shooting death. Investigators also had not said whether a weapon was recovered.
The shooting happened in west suburban Melrose Park, a Cook County village near Maywood and the Eisenhower Expressway. Later Thursday, authorities responded to a separate fatal incident near Mannheim Road that shut down parts of the expressway for hours. A Melrose Park spokesperson said there was no reason to believe the Amazon shooting was connected to that incident. The two scenes drew heavy police attention in the same part of the western suburbs, but officials treated them as separate investigations.
By Thursday evening, the Amazon facility had been declared safe, but the homicide case remained open. Police were still seeking the suspect and reviewing surveillance video, including footage of vehicles leaving the garage after the shooting. The next major update is expected from investigators when an arrest, suspect description or charging decision is announced.
