MacNeil rose to fame for his coverage of the Senate Watergate hearings on PBS before launching the “Robert MacNeil Report” with Jim Lehrer in 1975. The program evolved into the “MacNeil-Lehrer NewsHour” an hour-long show in 1983, becoming the first evening news broadcast of its kind and earning numerous Emmy and Peabody awards.
