Arrested Russian-American Excited to See Grandparents, Arrested for $51 Donation

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – A Russian-American woman was detained in Russia after allegedly donating $51 to a Ukrainian charity. Ksenia Karelina’s boyfriend, Chris Van Heerden, revealed that she was excited to visit her grandparents in her hometown in Russia, but she had no idea that she would face charges of treason.

When Karelina flew back to Russia to see her family, she was detained upon entry but then released. However, on the day she was scheduled to return to the United States, she disappeared. Van Heerden expressed his hope and belief that America would bring her back to him.

The boyfriend also shared that Karelina wrote him a letter after being arrested, describing her conditions and expressing concerns about his well-being. He explained that her attitude about her situation varies day by day, with some days being filled with strength and hope of returning home, while other days filled with despair.

Karelina’s boyfriend spoke of her background as a semi-professional ballerina and a full-time esthetician before her arrest in Russia. The detained woman never talked about any donations and always expressed pride in her Russian heritage, according to Van Heerden.

This case highlights the complexities and challenges faced by individuals with dual citizenship in politically charged areas, and the uncertainty and fear that may accompany such situations. The story of Ksenia Karelina serves as a reminder of the impact of geopolitical conflicts on individuals’ lives, leaving loved ones in emotional turmoil and uncertainty.
