Asian-American Queen Nymphia Wind Breaks “RuPaul’s Drag Race” “Asian Curse”

Los Angeles, CA – RuPaul’s Drag Race made history by crowning its first Taiwanese American drag queen in the series’ 16th season. Nymphia Wind, also known as Leo Tsao, emerged victorious over finalists Plane Jane and Sapphira Cristál, showcasing her unique design talent and passion for the color yellow and bananas.

Wind’s win marks a milestone for the Asian American community, as she aims to break what she refers to as the “Asian curse” on the competition. Growing up between Taipei, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, Wind brought a rich Asian cultural influence to her drag artistry, even after relocating to Brooklyn, New York, to further her career.

Throughout the season, Wind captivated audiences with her performances, including a traditional Asian sleeve dance and self-made designs that celebrated Butoh, a form of Japanese dance theater. Her journey on the show also shed light on her struggles with Western beauty standards growing up in Taiwan, prompting her to turn to makeup and drag as an escape.

In a recent interview on the show’s “Whatcha Packin'” series hosted by Michelle Visage, Wind expressed her desire to showcase the beauty and creativity of Asian culture through her drag. She emphasized the importance of representation and breaking stereotypes within the drag community.

With a bejeweled crown now adorning her head, Wind’s victory not only signifies a personal achievement but also a significant moment for diversity and inclusion in the drag world. As the first Taiwanese American winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race, she continues to inspire and pave the way for future generations of Asian American queens in the industry.
