ASTROS Injury Update: No Return for Kyle Tucker or Justin Verlander Before All-Star Break, Hope on the Horizon for Young Pitcher

Houston, Texas – The Astros’ manager Joe Espada delivered disappointing news on the injury front regarding two key players on the team. Speaking to reporters before the game in Toronto, Espada mentioned that outfielder Kyle Tucker and pitcher Justin Verlander are unlikely to return from the IL before the All-Star break.

Tucker has been sidelined since June 3 due to a right shin contusion sustained from a foul ball. Despite initial hopes for a minor league rehab assignment, Tucker has not yet begun on-field work, making a pre-All-Star break return doubtful. While the Astros would benefit from Tucker’s presence, ensuring his full recovery for the upcoming games is a top priority for the team.

On the other hand, Verlander has been out of action since June 9 due to neck discomfort. While showing progress, the veteran pitcher has not resumed mound work yet. The Astros are cautious not to rush Verlander back, prioritizing his long-term health over immediate returns to the pitching rotation.

Additionally, the likelihood of Verlander’s $35MM player option for 2025 being triggered remains slim. Even if he were to return after the All-Star break, meeting the required 140 innings pitched to activate the option seems improbable at this point.

Furthermore, rookie pitcher Jake Bloss is set to make a rehab start soon after being placed on the IL with shoulder discomfort. Bloss, considered one of the Astros’ promising prospects, is on track for a return to the field following his MLB debut.

In other AL West injury updates, the Rangers’ third baseman Josh Jung faces setbacks in his recovery from a wrist injury sustained in April. The Mariners, meanwhile, are optimistic about pitcher Bryan Woo’s potential return to the rotation ahead of the All-Star break, following a successful bullpen session and upcoming rehab start.

Overall, the Astros, Rangers, and Mariners continue to navigate their respective injury challenges while aiming for a strong second half of the season.
