Austin Police Department crash with motorist results in death

A tragic rollover crash on Highway 183 in North Austin has resulted in the loss of one life, according to the Austin Police Department (APD). The incident occurred on Friday afternoon and involved an on-duty APD officer and another motorist. The officer sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital, while the civilian driver tragically lost their life at the scene.

The APD Vehicular Homicide Unit is currently investigating the incident, with the subsequent review to be conducted by the APD Internal Affairs Unit. The identities of the officer and the deceased victim have not been disclosed. The crash led to the closure of all lanes on Highway 183 Northbound.

The incident occurred shortly after 5 p.m. and involved an on-duty APD officer in a marked unit and another driver.

As a result of the crash, all lanes on Highway 183 Northbound were closed to facilitate the investigation and clear the scene. The closure caused significant traffic congestion in the area, leading to delays for motorists traveling through that stretch of the highway. Authorities worked diligently to redirect traffic and minimize disruption as much as possible.

Rollover crashes can be particularly dangerous due to the potential for vehicle occupants to be ejected from the vehicle or sustain severe injuries. The APD Vehicular Homicide Unit’s investigation will likely focus on factors such as speed, driver impairment, and any other potential causes that may have contributed to the crash. Understanding the circumstances surrounding the incident is crucial for preventing similar accidents in the future.
