Courmayeur, Italy — A tragic avalanche at the Val Veny ski area claimed the lives of two skiers and left another severely injured on Sunday morning. The incident occurred in the Couloir Vesses, a well-known off-piste route favored by adventurous skiers.
The avalanche struck three individuals while they were skiing off-piste. One skier died immediately, while another succumbed to injuries en route to the hospital. The survivor was rushed to Le Molinette Hospital in Turin, where he is receiving treatment for serious injuries. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
Local authorities mobilized a substantial search and rescue effort involving 15 rescuers, three rescue dogs, and two helicopters. The swift response underscored the urgency of the situation, but sadly, it was not enough to save two of the three skiers involved.
Courmayeur, situated approximately 125 miles northwest of Milan, is renowned for its picturesque alpine scenery and skiing opportunities. However, the current avalanche warning in the Aosta Valley is rated at three out of five, indicating unstable and hazardous snow conditions.
