DETROIT, MI — A 23-year-old Detroit man faces four felony charges after authorities say he broke into a southwest Detroit home and sexually and physically assaulted a woman in her 60s before fleeing when another person returned to the residence.
Roderick Larkins is charged with three counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of first-degree home invasion. Police arrested him the same day as the alleged Aug. 24 attack near West Fisher Service Drive and Lansing Street, according to local reporting. A judge later denied bond, leaving Larkins in custody as the criminal case proceeds. The charges are allegations, and Larkins has not been convicted.
Police said the woman was inside her home when Larkins allegedly entered and confronted her. Authorities allege that he attempted to sexually assault her and physically attacked her as she resisted. The encounter later moved to another part of the home, where police allege a sexual assault occurred. News reports described significant injuries to the woman, but graphic details are being withheld.
The incident ended after the woman’s roommate and close friend, Juan Villarreal, returned to the home during the attack, according to WXYZ-TV. Villarreal said he arrived at about 8:15 a.m. and encountered the situation inside. He told the station that the man fled through a window after he came home. Villarreal then called 911, and Detroit police arrested Larkins later that day.
Surveillance video from the neighborhood also captured a man walking in the area before the alleged break-in, WXYZ reported. Neighbor Iris Garcia told the station she saw the man on the footage moving through the neighborhood and toward the rear of the property. Police have not publicly detailed how the person allegedly entered the home or what evidence investigators collected inside the residence.
The woman was taken to a hospital after the incident and has since been released, according to WXYZ. She was recovering at home with support from friends and neighbors as of the latest report. Her identity has not been publicly released in the reporting reviewed for this story. Authorities have also not reported any known relationship between Larkins and the woman.
Michigan law classifies first-degree criminal sexual conduct as a felony that can be punishable by life imprisonment or any term of years, depending on the circumstances and any eventual conviction. State law includes sexual penetration occurring during the commission of another felony among the circumstances that can support a first-degree criminal sexual conduct charge. The specific facts supporting each of the three counts against Larkins will be subject to the court process.
First-degree home invasion is also a felony under Michigan law. The offense can carry up to 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $5,000, or both upon conviction. Michigan law generally covers unauthorized entry into a dwelling involving an intended or committed felony, larceny or assault when another person is lawfully present or other statutory conditions are met.
The alleged attack has unsettled residents near the southwest Detroit home. Garcia described the area to WXYZ as normally calm and said neighbors were paying closer attention to security after what happened. Her comments reflected the immediate concern in the neighborhood while the woman continued recovering from the injuries authorities say she suffered.
