“Bling Bishop” Lamor Whitehead Sentenced to 9 Years for Fraudulent Schemes and Deception

NEW YORK – A well-known Brooklyn pastor, Lamor Whitehead, has been sentenced to nine years in prison for a variety of schemes, including defrauding one of his followers. Whitehead, also known as the “Bling bishop” for his extravagant lifestyle, was convicted earlier this year on charges such as wire fraud, attempted extortion, and making false statements to federal investigators.

Prosecutors argued that Whitehead, 45, abused his position as a religious leader to deceive individuals out of money to support his lavish way of living. He gained notoriety in 2022 when he was robbed at gunpoint during a live-streamed sermon, with thieves making off with a million dollars’ worth of jewelry and watches.

The United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Damian Williams, referred to Whitehead as a “con man” and stated that his sentencing signifies the end of his deceptive schemes. Whitehead, who led the Leaders of Tomorrow International Ministries in Canarsie, New York, reportedly misled individuals with false promises and used their money to purchase luxury goods, including expensive clothing and cars.

One victim, a member of his congregation, handed over $90,000 – her entire life savings – under the belief that the funds would be used to buy a home. Instead, the money was spent on Whitehead’s personal expenses, such as clothing and vehicle payments. Additionally, Whitehead falsified documents to secure business loans and attempted to extort a businessman in the Bronx by falsely claiming to have connections to New York Mayor Eric Adams.

The mayor, responding to Whitehead’s sentencing, mentioned that the pastor is in his thoughts and prayers, as reported by the New York Times. Despite the guilty verdict, Whitehead’s legal team has expressed their intention to challenge the conviction in court. Whitehead’s case serves as a cautionary tale about the misuse of trust and authority, highlighting the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions, regardless of their social or religious standing.
