Berlin, Germany – BMW revealed its latest concept car, the Vision Neue Klasse X, signaling a new direction for the automaker’s electric vehicle lineup. This crossover SUV features BMW’s iconic kidney-shaped grille and innovative battery and electric architecture, hinting at exciting developments in BMW’s future.
The automaker has been planning for the next stage of its electric vehicle evolution, known as the Neue Klasse. The first vehicle in this phase is expected to launch in 2025, following the release of new EV models like the BMW i4, i5, i7 Series, and iX compact SUV.
The Vision Neue Klasse X, a Sport Activity Vehicle (SAV), expands on the sedan version released last fall, with BMW aiming to create a whole family of related vehicles under this new concept. This initiative is emphasized as a significant redefining moment for the BMW brand.
Noteworthy features of the Vision Neue Klasse X include a striking kidney grille that lights up as the driver approaches the vehicle. Despite being unnecessary for an electric vehicle, BMW’s evolving design approach to the grille adds an element of distinction.
BMW’s focus on enhancing the battery technology stands out, with rounded battery cells providing 20% more energy density than conventional prismatic cells. The 800-volt architecture enables rapid charging, potentially offering 300km of range in just 10 minutes.
Additionally, the Vision Neue Klasse X boasts a 30% increase in range compared to previous models, thanks to various enhancements, including a 20% reduction in drag, new tires, and specialized brakes. The vehicle’s interior features sustainable materials, such as plant-based and mineral-based surfaces, as well as environmentally friendly manufacturing processes.
The incorporation of four “super-brains” in the vehicle’s operations reflects BMW’s commitment to advanced computing power. These high-performance computers aim to elevate the driving experience and pave the way for future automated driving capabilities.
