Breaking: Houston Rockets Acquiring Memphis Grizzlies’ Steven Adams in Exchange for Victor Oladipo and Draft Picks

Houston, TX – The Houston Rockets have made a significant trade, acquiring Memphis Grizzlies center Steven Adams in exchange for guard Victor Oladipo and three second-round draft picks, sources reported on Thursday.

Adams, 30, has been recovering from right knee surgery since January 2023, but he is expected to be fully healthy for the 2024-25 season. The Rockets are eager to have him as a backup to their emerging star center Alperen Sengun, to provide physicality, rebounding, and leadership. Adams has a reputation as a dominant force in offensive rebounding, leading the NBA in that category for two consecutive seasons prior to his injury. Despite missing time, he averaged 11.5 total rebounds per game in 42 appearances last season.

In addition to Adams, the Rockets also unloads $12.4 million in guaranteed salary from the trade, providing them with more flexibility for the 2024-25 season. On the other hand, Oladipo, who is on an expiring contract, has no set timeline for his return to play, adding to the uncertainty for the Grizzlies.

The Grizzlies, dealing with a series of injuries this season, are positioned to land a high lottery pick in the 2024 NBA draft. With the potential to add a top young talent to their already promising core of players like Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr., Desmond Bane, and Marcus Smart, the trade allows them to bolster their roster for the future.

This move signifies a shift in strategy for both teams as they navigate through the complexities of player injuries, contract situations, and long-term goals. With the trade deadline approaching, it remains to be seen how other teams will respond and reshape their rosters to compete in the ever-evolving NBA landscape.
