Broadway Star Sutton Foster to Lead ‘Once Upon a Mattress’ Musical on Stage This Summer!

New York City, NY – Tony Award-winning actress Sutton Foster is set to star in the Broadway production of “Once Upon a Mattress” this summer. The musical, which is a new adaptation by Amy Sherman-Palladino, recently concluded a successful two-week run at New York City Center’s Encores this past winter. Directed by Lear deBessonet, the show will begin its Broadway engagement at the Hudson Theatre on July 31, with the official opening night scheduled for August 12.

The limited Broadway run of “Once Upon a Mattress” is expected to run until November 30 before moving to Los Angeles for a four-week stint at the Center Theatre Groups’ Ahmanson Theatre starting December 10. While additional casting for the Broadway production has not been announced yet, Foster previously starred opposite Michael Urie in the City Center run of the musical.

Featuring music by Mary Rodgers, lyrics by Marshall Barer, and a book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, and Marshall Barer, “Once Upon a Mattress” is a modern retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale, “The Princess and the Pea.” The musical originally premiered on Broadway in 1959, with Carol Burnett in the lead role of Princess Winifred. Notably, there was a Broadway revival in December 1996 starring Sarah Jessica Parker.

For Sutton Foster, this is another busy theater season, following her roles in productions like “Sweeney Todd” and “The Music Man” opposite Hugh Jackman. Foster has previously collaborated with Amy Sherman-Palladino on the television show “Bunheads.” The Broadway production of “Once Upon a Mattress” is produced by Seaview and Creative Partners Productions, featuring choreography by Lorin Latarro, scenic design by David Zinn, lighting design by Justin Townsend, costume design by Andrea Hood, and sound design by Kai Harada.

Clearly, Sutton Foster’s star power and the creative team behind “Once Upon a Mattress” make it a highly anticipated show for both New York City and Los Angeles theater audiences. With a talented cast and creative vision, this Broadway musical promises to be a must-see event for theater enthusiasts.
