Campus Safety Violations: Liberty University Faces Record $14 Million Fine – You Won’t Believe What Happened!

Lynchburg, Virginia – The U.S. Department of Education has announced a groundbreaking $14 million fine imposed on Liberty University for violations of federal campus safety regulations. In addition, the university is required to allocate $2 million towards campus safety improvements over a two-year period as part of a post-review monitoring process.

Rich Cordray, the chief operating officer of the Federal Student Aid Office at the Education Department, emphasized the importance of creating safe and secure campus environments for students, faculty, and staff. He highlighted the obligations outlined in the Clery Act for educational institutions to maintain safety, investigate complaints, and disclose information about crimes and safety concerns to the community.

A comprehensive report, spanning over 100 pages, was released by the department following its review of Liberty University, a renowned private institution in Lynchburg, Virginia. With over 90,000 students enrolled, Liberty University stands as a prominent Christian university in the country, known for attracting distinguished speakers to its campus.

Despite being a private institution, Liberty University is required to comply with the Clery Act under federal financial aid regulations. In the 2022-2023 academic year alone, the university received nearly $880 million in student loans and grants from the Education Department.

Following an investigation by The Washington Post, concerns were raised about Liberty University’s alleged noncompliance with federal laws related to campus safety. The university was accused of various shortcomings, including discouraging crime reporting, failing to alert the campus about potential safety risks, and destroying evidence during the government inquiry.

In response to the allegations, Liberty University refuted the claims and emphasized its commitment to transparency and cooperation with the Education Department. The university highlighted its efforts to enhance campus safety measures, including the establishment of an Office of Equity and Compliance, investments in security infrastructure, and community training programs.

Lawmakers have expressed concerns about the inquiry into Liberty University, questioning the Education Department’s approach towards religious institutions and the imposition of fines. The review, initiated in response to a complaint in May 2021, covered data from 2016 to 2022 and was conducted by the Federal Student Aid Office of the Education Department.

Founded by televangelist Jerry Falwell in 1971, Liberty University has undergone leadership changes over the years, culminating in Air Force Maj. Gen. Dondi E. Costin assuming the role of president in July. The developments surrounding the investigation into Liberty University remain ongoing, with updates expected in the near future.
