Card Skimmers Discovered at Massachusetts Big Y Supermarkets in Recent Months – Check Your Accounts ASAP!

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – In a recent discovery, Massachusetts-based supermarket chain Big Y revealed that 11 of its stores were targeted by credit/debit card skimmers, with the majority of the devices being installed just days before Christmas.

The company experienced a string of incidents between Dec. 19-21, 2023, when individuals inserted skimming devices on a single terminal at each of the following Big Y stores in Massachusetts. These included locations in Springfield, Chicopee, Northampton, Ware, Southbridge, Worcester, Milford, Wilbraham, and Ludlow. Additionally, a skimming device was found at a Westfield location between Dec. 19, 2023, and Jan. 12, 2024.

Big Y is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and is working closely with law enforcement. The company has inspected all of its terminals and continues to do so. If any customer’s information is found to be compromised, they will be promptly notified and provided with additional information to protect themselves.

Customers who have shopped at these affected locations are being encouraged by Big Y to review their bank and credit card statements for any signs of fraudulent activity. Furthermore, customers who have questions or concerns can call Big Y directly.

This discovery also sheds light on similar incidents at other local grocery store chains in recent months. In December 2023, Roche Bros. Supermarkets announced the presence of card skimmers at multiple locations, including Sudbury Farms stores in Sudbury and Needham, Brothers Marketplace store in Weston, and Roche Bros. stores in Wellesley and Natick. Additionally, card skimmers were found at Market Basket stores in Chelsea, Reading, Somerville, and Haverhill.

The prevalence of card skimmers in various locations across Massachusetts and New Hampshire raises concerns about the security of credit/debit card information in retail settings. The ongoing investigation by authorities and cooperation from affected businesses will be crucial in addressing this issue and preventing future incidents.
