Cash Back Alert: Walmart Shoppers Could Get Refunds in $45 Million Lawsuit Payout

Miami, FL – Some shoppers in Miami, Florida, and across the nation could be receiving refunds from Walmart, following a $45 million settlement reached in a class-action lawsuit. The lawsuit alleged that Walmart engaged in deceptive practices by overcharging for certain grocery items, prompting eligible customers to file claims for cash payments by early June.

The settlement stems from a lawsuit filed in 2022, accusing Walmart of inflating the weight of products like meat, poultry, pork, seafood, and bagged citrus. The lawsuit also claimed that Walmart mislabeled the weight of produce and overcharged for clearance products by not charging customers the lowest advertised price, resulting in customers paying more than necessary.

Walmart, while denying the allegations and any wrongdoing, agreed to the $45 million settlement in November to avoid further legal proceedings. A spokesperson for the company mentioned that the settlement was reached in the best interest of both parties, despite Walmart’s denial of the accusations.

Customers who provide proof of purchase can receive up to 2% of the total cost of the eligible products they bought, with a cap of $500 per person. Those without receipts can still receive refunds ranging from $10 to $25, depending on the number of products purchased during the specified period.

Eligible customers have until May 22 to take action regarding the settlement, and until June 5 to submit a claim online or by mail. The U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida in Tampa is set to conduct a final settlement approval hearing on June 12, provided there are no appeals.

Following the hearing, settlement payments will be processed, with options for electronic delivery through platforms like Venmo, Zelle, ACH, or virtual prepaid Mastercard. Claimants also have the option to request paper checks, although the settlement administrator advises that it may take several months for the claims to be finalized and processed. Patience is recommended as customers await their refunds.
